Our research
Centre of Research Excellence PAVING is the Southern Hemisphere’s first centre to unite world-leading researchers, clinicians, and lived experience advocates to uncover shared immune response dysregulation behind post-viral conditions to accelerate the development of effective treatments and clinical interventions.
Research Programs
Our mission is to find solutions through an urgent, coordinated, and collaborative centre to tackle post‑viral sequelae.
We continue to see waves of viral outbreaks worldwide, and the scope and scale of post‑viral sequelae are only increasing. These conditions can affect individuals of all ages, including those who have had mild or even asymptomatic infections. The complexity of symptoms poses a significant burden on healthcare systems, patients, and society, leading to lost productivity, increased healthcare costs, and a reduced quality of life for affected individuals. A concerted focus on understanding the mechanisms underpinning these disorders will pave the way toward treatments to improve the lives of millions worldwide.
We aim to tackle four programs that cover research on Long COVID, multiple sclerosis (MS), and myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS), and to apply the findings to other post‑viral infection diseases.
Program 1
Define and target immune epigenetic changes in Long COVID
Program 2
Characterise and inhibit SARS-CoV-2 persistence in Long COVID
Program 3
Assess and inhibit EBV reactivation in multiple post-viral diseases
Program 4
Apply findings from Long COVID to post-viral diseases with unclear onset, ME/CFS
