About us
The Centre of Research Excellence PAVING: Post-Acute Viral Infection diseases Group is a multi-million-dollar research centre funded by the National Health and Medical Research Centre that unites recognised experts from La Trobe University, The University of Queensland, Monash University, QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute, The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research, Murdoch University, Griffith University and Deakin University with a shared goal to improve patient outcomes.
Our mission
The lasting effects of viral infections such as SARS‑CoV‑2 and Epstein‑Barr virus (EBV) represent a major global healthcare burden. Current treatments for post‑viral diseases are limited and mainly provide symptomatic relief, underscoring the need for new therapies. We have established a multidisciplinary team encompassing researchers, clinicians, and people with lived experience in Long COVID, multiple sclerosis (MS), and myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS). PAVING will investigate immune system dysregulation in post‑viral diseases to identify therapeutic targets, inform evidence‑based practices, and foster collaboration among researchers and healthcare providers, paving the way for future treatments. We aim to accelerate the development of effective therapies and improve patient outcomes.
Partnerships
Collaboration drives PAVING. Our team unites a productive network of world-leading researchers and clinicians suppored by lived experience participants, each bringing extensive inter/national collaborations to broaden our global reach and capability.
